With the Apprenticeship Levy having come into force this month, we thought we would share some key points about the Levy that you may not be clear about\/aware of. These five points are the main queries that have popped up in our conversations with clients about the Levy and we hope they\u2019ll clear up a few thing for you too…<\/p>\n

  1. You can train existing employees as well as recruit new ones<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In fact the greatest number of apprenticeships at the moment is among 19 year olds who are already in work.<\/strong> While apprenticeships will contribute to some job creation, its main priority is to upskill <\/strong>the population.<\/p>\n

    1. Apprenticeships are NOT restricted to people in entry-level roles<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Apprenticeships are typically associated with entry-level roles and young people. However apprenticeships today are suitable for employees of all ages and levels of experience. From developing your managers with Higher Apprenticeships (Level 4+) to having employees further their specialist knowledge with Post-graduate Apprenticeships (Level 7), the Levy aims to provide ring-fenced learning and development funds for all.<\/p>\n

      1. Zero hour contracts apprenticeships can be done<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        An apprenticeship is so much more than a training course and must be completed over minimum of 365 days. This number increases depending on the level of the apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are also available for those on a zero hour contract, providing the individual is regularly working between 16-30 hours per week.  The duration of the apprenticeship is increased by the proportion relevant to the likely number of hours to be worked.<\/p>\n

        1. A few things the Levy CAN be used for (that you may not be aware of)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            \n
          • Distance, online or blended learning<\/strong> related to apprenticeship.<\/li>\n
          • Funds required for retakes<\/strong>, providing additional learning takes place.<\/li>\n
          • Accommodation costs<\/strong> for learning delivered through residential modules (where the residential learning is a requirement for all apprentices).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            A few things the Levy CANNOT be used for (that you may not be aware of)<\/strong><\/p>\n

              \n
            • Enrollment, induction, prior assessment or diagnostic activity<\/strong> before the commencement of the apprenticeship.<\/li>\n
            • Travel costs<\/strong> for apprentices.<\/li>\n
            • Apprentices\u2019 wages.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
