An issue that the report argues could be contributing to rising youth unemployment figures.<br \/>\n\u201cThe UK stands out among European economies for its combination of relatively low unemployment with relatively high youth unemployment,\u201d the report states.<br \/>\n<strong>A focus on providing clear career pathways<\/strong><br \/>\nThe report makes a series of recommendations as to how the disconnect between education and business can be remedied.<br \/>\nThis includes creating work experience programs that are aligned with study programs and providing career pathways that are clearly defined for those entering the employment market for the first time.<br \/>\nIt also highlights that there needs to be more career development opportunities for those already in work.<br \/>\n\u201cOur current skills system develops high skills only to see them increasingly underemployed in the wrong places,\u201d it said.<br \/>\nThe UKCES also argues that there should be an even greater emphasis on creating more vocational routes into employment.<br \/>\n\u201cThe UK has created a greater supply of higher skills through graduates, and the expansion of higher education, and alternative vocational routes combining study and work are under-utilized,\u201d the report said.<br \/>\n<strong>Technical degree announced by Ed Miliband<\/strong><br \/>\nThe UKCES\u2019s comments come as Ed Miliband has announced the party\u2019s plans for a \u201ctechnical degree\u201d that would be launched under a Labor government.<br \/>\nIt is hoped that the degree, which would enable students to study part-time as well as working part-time, will help to create a new generation of technically skilled STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) graduates, at a time when employers in these industries have expressed concerns about a skills shortage.<br \/>\nIf you are considering hiring from the graduate talent pool, Discovery Graduates can help with all stages of the graduate recruitment process including attraction, recruitment and retention.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UK employers need to take a number of steps to tackle \u201cdeep-rooted\u201d workforce challenges that could be hampering the UK\u2019s growth prospects, starting with offering more \u201cquality work experience\u201d for young people.
