{"id":2953,"date":"2015-07-09T13:44:14","date_gmt":"2015-07-09T13:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discovery-graduates.com\/?p=2953"},"modified":"2015-07-09T13:44:14","modified_gmt":"2015-07-09T13:44:14","slug":"employees-should-sell-themselves-more-on-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/discovery-adr.com\/us\/employees-should-sell-themselves-more-on-social-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Employees should sell themselves more on social media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.discovery-graduates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Social-Media-620.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2840 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.discovery-graduates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Social-Media-620.jpg\" alt=\"Social-Media-620\" width=\"620\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UK workforce should increase their use of social media to help sell their skills and abilities to potential employers, new research claims.<\/p>\n<p>Market researchers Bilendi looked into the use of social networking sites and their findings coincide with the Finale of the Brathay Apprentice Challenge 2015.<\/p>\n<p>More than 27 million Brits use social media on a daily basis according to the research, yet only a quarter have sold themselves using the platforms to boost their careers.<\/p>\n<p>Only 19% of those questioned said they used it to aid their career enhancement too, suggesting many graduates and other workers could be missing out on a number of opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Given that 65% of those responsible for hiring new staff admitted to using social media, graduates could benefit massively from having a profile that showcases their skills.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, 12% of recruiters said that a good social media presence impressed them and called for people to share more information about themselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlighting soft skills and abilities <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Activities commonly missed from profiles included fundraising and volunteering activities \u2013 only 19% and 17% of people respectively included these on their pages.<\/p>\n<p>Coaching and mentoring, team building and leadership were also widely ignored although they are regarded as skills that many employers look for.<\/p>\n<p>Three quarters of jobseekers revealed that they are looking to complete extra courses and training to enhance their resumes yet many are forgetting to celebrate the skills they already have.<\/p>\n<p>Godfrey Owen, Chief Executive of the Brathay Trust \u2013 a young people\u2019s development charity \u2013 said that self-selling on social media provides a great medium for those exploring the job market.<\/p>\n<p>He added that there is more to it than just talking about qualifications and experience though, suggesting that soft skills could also reveal a lot about an individual.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Owen added that finalists in the Apprentice Challenge all recognized the importance of these soft skills as being vital to a successful career.<\/p>\n<p>These help to make graduates and other candidates stand out from the crowd, providing them with a useful head start when competition for roles is high.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a graduate looking for your first job, take a look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discovery-graduates.com\/graduate-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">jobs available through Discovery Graduates<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK workforce should increase their use of social media to help sell their skills and abilities to potential employers, new research claims.
