{"id":2941,"date":"2015-07-07T14:49:41","date_gmt":"2015-07-07T14:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discovery-graduates.com\/?p=2941"},"modified":"2015-07-07T14:49:41","modified_gmt":"2015-07-07T14:49:41","slug":"graduates-advised-to-look-to-the-north","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/discovery-adr.com\/us\/graduates-advised-to-look-to-the-north\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduates advised to look to the North"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.discovery-graduates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Blurred-city-workers-650.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2844 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.discovery-graduates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Blurred-city-workers-650.jpg\" alt=\"Blurred-city-workers-650\" width=\"650\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The best opportunities for fresh graduates can be found in Manchester and the North, according to new research from the Intergenerational Foundation (IF). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discovery-graduates.com\/graduate-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here to see our latest opportunities in the North&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The report \u2013 titled <em>Should Young People Look North?<\/em> \u2013 focused on matching affordable housing with graduate job opportunities and found Manchester topped the pile with other Northern destinations also performing well.<\/p>\n<p>Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, Liverpool and Nottingham performed well while Bristol and Reading also made the list of attractive destination for graduates \u2013 although there were greater difficulties finding cheap housing and good job prospects in these Southern locations.<\/p>\n<p>The locations offering the least opportunities for qualified young people were those where large proportions of wealthy retired households were present \u2013 Poole, Christchurch, Worthing and Southend-on-Sea being four key examples.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finding the best locations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Striking a balance between opportunities and affordable property was found to be the key to success as a number of locations had plenty of homes but few job openings for hopeful graduates.<\/p>\n<p>Middlesbrough, Oldham, Rochdale, Hull and Blackpool all fall into this category with the lack of opportunities highlighted by the fact that less than 25% of the working population have a degree.<\/p>\n<p>The opposite was found in London and Greater London with England\u2019s capital reporting a large number of graduates but few affordable properties.<\/p>\n<p>This has led to IF co-founder Angus Hanton suggesting that young people could be better off looking away from the capital for a better work-life balance.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested that while young people want both affordable housing and to work, the situation in many areas is that they can find one or the other but not both.<\/p>\n<p>Looking north to locations such as Manchester could provide more opportunities and better value as there is a huge untapped graduate talent pool.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hanton concluded that the IF\u2019s findings overlap with the Government\u2019s strategy to develop a \u201cNorthern powerhouse\u201d by devolving powers to some of the major cities.<\/p>\n<p>Discovery Graduates have a number of excellent graduate positions available in the Northern region. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discovery-graduates.com\/graduate-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Take a look at them here&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The best opportunities for fresh graduates can be found in Manchester and the North, according to new research from the Intergenerational Foundation (IF).
